Overview

A collection of Dr. John Atcheson's papers relating to his work as a delivery doctor and pediatrician in the Idaho Springs area, as well as some of his military documents, all dating between 1896 and 1939.

Biographical / Historical

John Atcheson was born in New York City, but moved to Denver as a child. He graduated from the Gross Medical School in 1900, and relocated to Idaho Springs in 1901, where he lived the remainder of his life. During World War I, he served in Europe in the Army Medical Corps (see series 2). In 1898 he married his first wife, Addie. A few years after Addie's death in 1927, John married Rose Brunson. He died in 1940 from injuries relating to a car accident (his car slid on ice and plunged into Clear Creek).

Dr. Atcheson delivered over 1400 babies in the Clear Creek region (all towns in the county, as well as Central City and Black Hawk) between 1901 and 1939 (see series 1). Because of his work as a doctor in the region, the Clear Creek Mining Journal noted in his obituary that "He is without doubt the best known man in Clear Creek County, whose presence and ministering kindness will be keenly missed" (Clear Creek Mining Journal, Feb. 23, 1940).
