Overview

A collection of documents relating to Leopold and Samuel Sternberger and their mining operations in the Idaho Springs and Fall River areas between 1879 and 1931. The Sternberger's originally operated mines independently, but by the turn of the 20th century ran the Pennsylvania Mining Company (renamed the Pennsylvania Mining, Power and Reduction Company in 1910).

Biographical / Historical

- Leopold Sternberger (c. 1845-1928) was the manager and superintendent of the Pennsylvania Mining, Power and Reduction Company at the turn of the 20th century. He was born in Germany c. 1845, but grew up in Philadelphia. Both him and his younger brother Samuel Sternberger became involved in mining in Clear Creek and Gilpin counties in the 1890s, and eventually established the Pennsylvania Mining, Power and Reduction Company. Leopold died in 1928.
- Samuel Sternberger (c. 1848- ) was born in November, 1847 in Germany. His family immigrated to Philadelphia in 1851.
- Jacob J. Elliott, whose name appears on some of the documents, is noted in the 1890 Colorado Directory as the manager of the Idaho Springs Electric Light Co., proprietor of the Miners Assay Office, and Manager of the Placer Brick and Tile Co. in Idaho Springs. It is likely this material came to the Sternberger brothers via an acquisition of this company.
- The Sternberger’s company went through a few various names throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was first called the Pennsylvania Mining Co. In 1910, it became the Pennsylvania Mining, Power and Reduction Company. The Mines Register of 1920 notes that the Pennsylvania Mining, Power and Reduction Company "owns entire stock issue of the Fall River Hydro Electric Power Co.” and their property “lies between Fall river and Central City, Clear Creek and Gilpin counties, and includes… about 2,500 acres…” (Mines Register, p. 560)

Arrangement

The documents arrived unorganized in one shoebox. Some of the items are stuck together due to old water damage. Items are now arranged in folders by type of document.
